Topic: Vega-Tables Demo?

VEGATABLESDEMO:

Anyway, my only point was that, getting down to the line, I find it hard to believe that Brian was still cutting basic demos. But maybe he was. We know that sometime from November to December "Vega-Tables" went from being "My Vega-Tables" or the "Earth" section of "The Elements" to a track of its own. I could be a demo and everything I said full of shit. But, I doubt it.

Okay - here's my take on the VT demo; the piano track was intended to be the backing track (official) but the lead vocal and "laughing" vocal were only for "test" purposes, probably because the session went late or the BB weren't around & well, they'd have to be to finish the song. I don't think the piano track was finished either, i.e. it was decided to go ahead and put vocals on the track they had while the idea was hot rather than perfect the backing (and, as Jon said, the "slop" was always part of the vision of the song)

There is also the fact that the WAY "Vegetables" sounded changed between the April version and the SMILEY SMILE version. There is no real reason why the November 1966 version could not have been the basic track. In fact, as sloppy as it may sound, I still have a hard time comparing its concession as a "demo" with the one "tinkering demo" we do have: "Heroes & Villains". It may have been an early version and even a demo, but I have a hard time believing that.

Right, and I agree with the Brian/Al split on the April version. However -- oddly enough -- listen to the tag of Smiley, the fast "I know that you'll feel better" cribbed from the April version. That, and I could be wrong but I bet I'm not, is DENNIS. What the hell is DENNIS doing on "Vegetables?"

The demo version sounds to these ears very very much like Brian and Mike.

Article: Well you asked for me so here I is.

Sure sounds like a group unison vocal on the Smiley version to me.

I dunno, I just think the "slop" is part of the song!!!

Now this is something I can't argue with!

The Smiley version is Brian solo at piano with a really sloppy vocal, too!

But this is something I can! Pretty sure it's Al &Mike to the fore (singing the same notes) on the Smiley version, with Brian actually sort of in the background once the backing vocs come in (I think the harmony part is Carl and Al). Could be wrong about Mike, but I think I hear him coupling on the lead. Where's George... does he have perfect timbre too?

I think Brian couples with Al on the Smile-era single version only. But whadda I know? With thems guys sometimes I gots trouble tellin!

If memory serves me, isn't the track counted in properly like a studio take? Could still be a demo though, just a well made one.

Why is it only clearly a demo? It sounds like there's several different vocal overdubs, at least two people that sound like Mike and Brian sharing the lead, etc. Why isn't this possibly tracking for the first two verses? I don't see what's "clearly" demo-ish about this one, except the "sloppiness" which carries over into EVERY version of Vegetables, from the single to Smiley Smile.

VEGETABLES 65% (but order of sections unsure)

The Vega-Tables demo, lacking a recording date but probably done in '66 is clearly only a demo. So, no Vega-Tables for SMiLE!

>>>> well, if you have the Smiley Smile two-fer you've heard two complete BW versions of H&V.

Uh huh, and yes, for a time the "barnshine" section WAS the ending -- Brian even re-cut this section in late-Feburary, almost exactly identically.

>> Interestingly, the only information on the vocals I've seen have described it as a "cowboy song".

Which means it's yet another song to follow in the "americana" mold, just an interjection.

>>> Don't forget the possibility the Old Master Painter vocals were not recorded/as yet to be found. Possible they weren't intended to be recorded, but who knows?
